Chiefly financial materials, arranged chronologically, of Captain John Dundore relating to his tannery business, Dundore & Givens, in Port Republic, Rockingham County, Va. Includes receipts for money paid to Henderson and Son of Fredericksburg, Va., as well as Baltimore merchants for items such as hides, tanning oil, and curing knives. Personal receipts concern fees for reproducing documents regarding Dundore's marriage to Jane Martin in May 1806; purchases of food items such as sugar, coffee, and beef; purchases of clothing items, including shoe repairs, linens, and French silk; a list, 1842, of house building materials; as well as a bill, 1851, for a headstone for Dundore's second wife, Catharine, and a bill, 1857, for a headstone for Dundore's business associate William Eddins. A receipt from 1852 notes taxes Dundore paid on 10 adult slaves. Letter of 1845 April 15 from Thomas Holt asks Dundore for money owed him in order to pay a debt on his farm.

Historian and scholar Thomas C. Holt was born on November 30, 1942 in Virginia. Holt attended and graduated from segregated schools in southside Virginia. He went to work for the SNCC during the Civil Rights Movement in his hometown, Danville, and in Cambridge, Maryland in 1965. He graduated from Howard University with his B.A. degree in 1965 and his M.A. degree 1966.
